Refusing to be told NO! I like KNOW Better

Naughty Baby Still Knows How to Be Born!

Recently, one of my favorite bloggers, Mrs. Birthing Without Fear posted this lovely message on Facebook.

DO NOT let anyone...friend, family, care provider....tell you that you can't VBAC. That is not their choice. If they do not believe in you, your body and birth, they do not belong anywhere near your birth. They don't deserve the honor of witnessing your VBAC! Find people who will feel blessed to be involved in such an empowering experience with you! Your body was and is meant to birth YOUR babies!!! ♥ ~Mrs. BWF

Ah! Such lovely words my heart hath hardly heard (<---alliteration win!) . I can't imagine better medical advice to give out on the Internet. We as womyn SHOULD turn away from our heath care providers in droves and finally take our bodies back. We need to hold this moment as our own and never allow something like placenta previa or even a placental abruption stop you from the birth you want!

Current Mrs. BWF has a blog up about making the choice between a Midwife Assisted Birth or going Unassisted (and to be a real womyn those are your only options!)

Go on over and tell Mrs. BWF that Mama Tao and her crew support her 100%

  1. How dare you attack Mrs BWF????She has an army of 6000 who will follow her, beleive her and worship her to the end...whether is is death ...or bith rape(and we all know the later is far worse..) She knows more about birth than anybody I know of! she has had 5 kids and did the holy grail of all birth...UC. She should be given a medal for the priceless support she gives woman and the empowerement that comes with ignoring medical advice.
Dire hard, blind ,lobomotomized, but empowered BWF follower!

  2. Look, I can see how this can be misconstrued but she was only talking about VBAC. There is very little reason medical or otherwise for a mother to not attempt a VBAC if she wants to. There is a .3 % greater risk for a a VBAC mama to rupture then a mama who has never had a cesarean. Also, it has been my consistent experience that Mrs. BWF preaches mother's choice. In the end not even a doctor should force a woman into something she doesn't want to do. If they are right or not doesn't matter, ultimately it is mama's choice and if people don't stand by an support her in that choice then they don't need to be involved spreading negativity like the plague. It has also been my experience with BWF that things like plecental privia are exceptions that do need medical intervention, but even then (not that I agree) if a mom doesn't want a c section she should not be forced into it. Know the risks, weigh them, and make her choice whatever it may be.

  3. Booooo. Stop starting drama on the internetz. She never said anything of that kind. You are totally taking her words out of context. Do I smell some jealousy and insecurity in your post? Seriously, what is your problem woman?

  4. Ladies! I think I was very clear in my utter and blind support in Mrs. BWF. Her words were so fab and truth-y that I sipmly could not help but share them with everyone.
Now, quit rattling the kennel or I shall have you all spayed :P
Also, anyone who is interested in making a serious complaint is welcome to e-mail me. I'm not allowed to take my wig off on the blog if you catch my drift. themamatao@hotmail.com

  5. I should have said costume. "Wig" makes it sound like I am going to cut a Byotch. Which is not the case. I take complaints seriously.

  6. Well, I know for a fact that acupuncture will prevent a previa, despite that web link's erroneous line about it not being preventable. I know this for a fact because I did acupuncture with y last pregnancy and I didn't get a previa (i would of course refused a section anyway).

  7. Wimmin who truly trust in themselves and there bodies do NOT get get stuff like placenta previa. All these "complicatons" of pregnancy and birth are just manifestations of negative thinking. With positive thinking the universe will sigh and easy birth will result. Do this and vbac won't be necesary because c-sec won't happen in the first place!!!!

Mrs BWF is such an inspiration and I love her blog! I can only hope I'll get the chance to experience an amazing VBAC for my next pregnancy like she has. I find myself thinking about it often - what I'll wear, who I'll want to be there to share the experience with me. It's all so exciting! I just need to find someone to give me a c-section with the current pregnancy so I can get ready for the next one...

  9. BWF is right, don't let the fact that your sons head is bigger than your pelvic opening stop you from your VBAC! just break you pelvic bones instead! if you think happy thoughts you can even do it yourself during a UC, with pain relieving herbs. REAL women don't have this problem anyway- if you do, you must have been eating non organic food!

    ReplyDelete
  10. the reasons why complications occur during birth are fear, and malnutrition. that is IT!!!!! Mrs BWF proves that everyone can VBMAC even UBAC. If it worked for her it will work for all of her followers!!!

  11. Wow, you're kind of a cunt, aren't you.

  12. Wow thank god i am a fan of Mrs BWF instead of being a fan of your page!!.... you are a very nasty person indeed!!..

  13. Quit causing drama. GROW UP. You are putting words in her mouth and you know it.

  14. WTF? This post has been up forever?! You guys are later than BWF's period...

  15. Ok 1)I think women can make their own choice as to what kind of birth they want.
2)I guess I don't understand what is going on here... attacking people based on onions? I would hope that a women who knew better than to have a home birth if there were complications during pregnancy would not listen to someone who said 'do this'...
Maybe I am confused but it seems really odd here...

  16. Onions are the prefered method of weapon for NCB advocates. You really need to educate yourself.

  17. I think most of us birth-passionate people really want to help pregnant mamas find their strength in our broken birthing system. We often say things that are misinterpreted or taken out of context, but have validity when taken the right way. Instead of disrupting the peace and creating discord, it would benefit future mamas out there for us to focus on the ultimate goal. And I am sure that is not name calling or blog bashing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ^ Um, most of us don;t think the Birth system IS broken.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am an obstetrician. And many of my colleagues would agree that obstetrics is a broken system. Perhaps you are talking about midwifery?

    ReplyDelete
  20. If you mean the sad system that is LM,CPMs and DEMs who are undereducated, don't have to have college degrees, would not be able to work in other 1st world countries and work illegally in many states leaving a trail of dead babies behind them, then yes THAT system is broken...all to hell.

If you are saying that the homebirth system is the one tht works in the US then I need to know if your last name is Teeter so I can be sure that you are not MY OB, thanks :D

  21. A CMN for a low risk pregnancy is the ideal system, in my opinion. I do not advocate for homebirths, although I understand why people (low-risk) have them (and am not against them).

Pitocin, epidurals, forceps, episiotomies, and planned (unnecessary) c-sections make for one broken system. Baby (resident) doctors aren't taught how to risk manage. They don't have the experience. They section because that is what they are taught to do. Attendings take freedoms with the expectation that you (the patient) are uneducated (stripping your membranes without asking) and/or don't care. Inductions at 40 weeks two days? Really? 50% of all birth traumas (hemorrhage, uterine rupture, fetal distress) are caused by pitocin. That is straight from the obstetrics department.

Perhaps the saddest thing of all, especially at a teaching hospital, is that you are just their next learning experience. How do I know this? Because I've done it. And your labor better happen on time, else you'll hold up the room for the next $16,000 laboring mom.

  22. Well I had a CNM for both of my births so, I agree with you there.I am not an OB so I am not qualified to say what is or is not ok with the current medical system. I am qualified to say any other types of midwife (not counting CNMs) should not be able to work in the US. They are not allowed to work anywhere else in the world, why are they here?

Did you know that to be a CPM, you only have to watch 40 births? And that was just added. A few months ago they only had to watch 20. How is that safe or something we should be telling other women to do?

We do adore midwives here at MT--The real kind, who are Certified NURSE Midwives. All others need not apply.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would not personally recommend a CPM. If I was one of the 5% of moms who hemorrhage after delivery, I would want access to oxytocin.

(20 births is undoubtedly FAR too few).

I am just not so sure that the approach that this blog takes legitimately informs primipara women.

  24. In the blog role you will find many, many blogs that do such. Mama Tao was created mainly as a place for the non-crunchy mothers to let off steam and have a laugh. It's not in any way meant to inform, thus the over the top antics.

    ReplyDelete
  25. LOL Claire! Wow... I thought this mamatao person was an idiot, but you take the cake, here! Midwives ARE allowed to practice/work in other countries, and in many of them midwives attend 70+% of all births. CPM certification varies by state; in Texas, for example, an aspiring CPM must be present for 100 LIVE births. It should also be noted that in those countries were midwives attend most of the births, the maternal/infant mortality/morbidity rate is MUCH lower than in the US.

The problem you have is that you seem to think birth is medical. It's not. It's no more medical than having sex and getting pregnant. You don't need to be in the hospital for that, do you? You could always get an STD or something, so you don't have yourself artificially inseminated, do you? BIRTH IS NOT MEDICAL, so midwives do not need a nursing degree. The WHO recommends a cesarean rate, nation-wide, that does not exceed 10-15%, yet the US is at around 33% and Brazil is at nearly 90% of all births.

Back to the point by the moronic OP... Mrs. BWF was not saying, "Even if you have placenta percreta, go ahead and refuse a cesarean!" No. Too often is a mother told she must have/needs a cesarean that is unnecessary. An unnecessary/elective cesarean is riskier to both mother and baby than a vaginal birth, and it even says so on the cesarean section consent form. What BWF was talking about, for example, is a mother being told she must have a cesarean because her pelvis is too small, when in fact it's an appropriate size and the doctors just won't let her get up and move. The lithotomy position is often the worst position to labor in. Mrs. BWF was talking about a mother's autonomy, the right for her to choose... she's telling women not to be afraid to make their own decision, and not to do something just because someone said to. Educate yourself, and trust in your body. Our bodies were made to birth, and the rate at which they let us down is small. Evolution knows what it's doing. As Ina May says, "Let your monkey do it!"

  26. Dear Sara M. You spent a lot of thime of THAT hot mess. Gee thanks. Ina May IS a monkey!

  27. This blog is pathetic...someone has too much time on their hands. Geez...get a life instead of ripping on someone else. If you don't like BWF...then don't read her.

  28. This blog seems so hateful. It's just really counterproductive.
Many states have excellent cpm's. I had a home waterbirth 5 months ago and it was peaceful perfection. My midwife has delivered well over 1000 babies and has been delivering babies since before I was born. She has had ZERO fetal or maternal deaths or permanent injuries. Her statistics are far better than the Ob's around here. She is extremely knowledgable and did things the OB from my first birth knew nothing about.
There's no need to knock all midwives that aren't CNM's. Seattle has an excellent midwifery school and my midwife was in the first class. And the woman that delivered me 27 years ago helped start that school. Incredible. Niether of them was a CNM.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You DO know that CNMs see mote than 1000 births before they even leave school right? 1000 births over 20 or more years is kinda pathetic.
